Basic travel medical insurance plans cover for accident, illness and emergency medical care. Typically, a comprehensive visitor medical insurance policy should ideally offer the same medical benefits as the domestic medical insurance coverage plans in case the duration of stay abroad is for a long time
The following are some of the suggested coverage benefits that should not be compromised
- In-patient and out-patient admission
- 24-hour emergency medical assistance
- Prescription drugs coverage
- Doctor consultation charges (include the flexibility of consulting a medical practitioner outside the network)
- Surgeries
- Diagnostic tests, Laboratory tests and x-rays
- Dental and ortho-care
- Pregnancy and maternity coverage (for expectant mothers)
- Emergency evacuation and repatriation benefits
- Private nursing care (in case of aged people)
- Accidental death and dismemberment benefits
Before finalizing on the insurance policy, read the terms and conditions and exclusions section of the policy document.

Mention the date on which you are submitting the cancellation request while you draft the letter. Do not miss out on mentioning the policy number, the effective start date of the international travel insurance plan and the number of months the policy has been unused. Request your insurance provider to confirm that the cancellation process has started. Mention the total amount you have paid and the unused premium for which you are requesting the reimbursement.
Sign the letter personally by hand and take a copy of it for filing purposes before you send the same to your insurance provider. Send the cancellation request by certified mail system and request and acknowledgment receipt so that you are sure your request has reached the insurance provider.

Multiple travel insurance policy excesses

In some of the travel insurance plans, a standard excess is applied for every insured member or each claim or each event. This is called multiple excess. The travel insurance policy document can be consulted for knowing this amount.
For example, if 4 members are travelling under a single group insurance plan and all the insured members’ baggage or lost, you need to pay 4 times the standard policy excess. This means that is the standard excess mentioned in the policy is $50, a total amount of $200 would be deducted while reimbursing the claim.
The same rule hold good for a single event. For example, if you have lost a purse and it had camera in it, you need to bear the expense of two excesses as purse and camera reimbursement is considered separate events.

International coverage: This is suitable for overseas travelers who are traveling outside their homeland for vacation or business purposes. Depending on the duration of the travel, short term or long term policies can be purchased
Single trip coverage: This insurance package is suitable for a specific trip and is typically taken with coverage for loss of personal baggage, adventure sports rider policy and trip cancellation insurance.
Group travel insurance policies: This is generally chosen by corporate organizations or tourist operators. The insured enjoys good discounts under group plans but the benefits are common for all members of the group and cannot be specifically customized for any single member.
Annual multi-trip policies: These policies are suitable for frequent travelers who go on multiple overseas trips to various destinations in a year either for leisure or business. Costs are calculated based on the services opted for coverage, age of the insured and no. of people covered under a single insurance plan
International students policies: These policies are specifically designed for international scholars and students who leave abroad for pursuing their higher studies. They are mostly full-time students enrolled in some international education program
