People who are already having domestic health insurance coverage through Medicare, Medicaid or employer’s health insurance plan are often confused whether they need to purchase an tourist health insurance plan if they are planning a trip abroad.

Note that these domestic health insurance plans may not be very beneficial for international travel as the coverage they provide in case of medical emergencies are quite minimal. In some cases like medical evacuation assistance, the compensation is negligible compared to the actual expense you would incur!

Hence, if you already have health insurance coverage, check the insurance policy document and gather information about whether the coverage is available only in the native land or you are eligible for benefits outside your home country also.

In case you are not covered outside your native country, it is essential that you purchase a specific tourist travel insurance plan which would cover the travel risks during your stay abroad.

Note down the emergency helpline number before you leave for your travel so that you can directly contact them for any assistance in case required.
