Going on culinary trips is a recent travel trend, and these trips are not restricted to vineyards anymore. When undertaking one of these in a foreign country, you’ll need an iron stomach and a reliable tourist medical insurance plan! It is also an indicator of the times that some of these trips are organized around popular TV food shows.

Sometimes, you can get on a taste tour of just a city or an important “area” of the city—New York has several such tours. Or, you can expand a bit more (not just your waistline), and go on a culinary tour of a whole country. Many countries in Europe, especially France and Italy, offer many such tours.

While booking such a tour, remember to let the organizer of the tour know of any food allergies or special dietary restrictions you might have. However, reconsider the food tour if your restrictions might make most local food inedible for you. If you’re a vegan, for example, you may want to give the steak-heavy Argentinean cuisine a pass.

A culinary tour can be an excitement for your taste buds, but not as much for your stomach. Learn a little about the kind of food that you will explore, and be prepared with an antacid, just in case. However, foreign food can feature new ingredients that you haven't tasted, and these might cause allergies. To be safe, always purchase adequate tourist health insurance, for peace of mind during your foreign trip.
